Apple iPod nano

Before you begin

  • Read the legal information section of this website. Place your Apple iPod nano 4th generation on a clean flat and soft surface, such as a rubber mat or a piece of soft cloth and get the required opening tools

  • Step 0

Opening the iPod nano 4G is a complete mystery at first sight, because Apple built in a clever locking mechanism. Once you're past those intricacies the remaining steps are relatively straighforward.

Begin by prying off the top cover with a safe open tool.

    Step 1

This is what it looks like when the top cover is removed. The hold switch slider will also come off as soon as you remove the cover.

    Step 2

Remove the two phillips screws near the sides, the screwdriver needs to be at a 45 degree angle to access the screws.

    Step 3

Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pull out the ipod nano 4g screen module about 1/2 an inch.

    Step 4

This is about as far as the nano screen module will come out.

    Step 5

Slide the blade of the flathead under the hold switch. Be careful not to put too much strain on the ribbon cable as you release the switch from the glue.

    Step 6

Turn the iPod nano 4th generation on it's back.

    Step 7

The tricky part! Push on the bottom of the nano 4g lens and move it left and right. You are trying to push the bottom of the lens under the casing. This will work now, because you partially pulled the screen module out and there is room for the bottom of the lens to move down.

    Step 8

As you can see the bottom part of the nano glass lens is now between the casing and the logic board and the top of the lens now is released from the casing.

    Step 9

You can take the lens out and set it aside.

    Step 10

Open the latch of the screen ribbon cable.

    Step 11

Carefully slide the flathead under the screen ribbon cable and pull it out of the connector.

    Step 12

You can now completely pull out the nano screen module and replace it with a new one if that is your goal. If you want to replace the ipod nano 4g battery, iPod nano 4g clickwheel or iPod nano 4g logic board continue below.

Step 13 - iPod nano 4G logic board replacement.

Pry off the bottom cover with a safe open tool or flathead.

    Step 14

Remove the screws on the sides.

    Step 16

Insert a screwdriver in the headphone jack aperture and try to pull the entire module consisting of headphone jack and logic board.

    Step 17

This is what it looks like when the module was removed from the casing just enough to have access to the clickwheel connector. Open the latch of the clickwheel connector as shown in the image.

    Step 18

Slide the flatheat under the ribbon cable, carefully removing it from the glue.

    Step 19

Detach the connection between the two ribbon cables when they are fully released from the glue.

    Step 20

Now gently pull the nano 4g motherboard module more. It may be necessary to lift the battery from the top to make the module slide.

    Step 21

This is what is looks like when module is being removed from the casing. Success, you have fully disassembled your iPod nano 4G.

Once the nano motherboard is removed you can push down on the wheel to make it snap loose from the casing.

If you want to replace the nano battery, look at how it is soldered to the motherboard, the replacement should be somewhat self explanatory.

    Apple iPod nano

    Before you begin

  • Read the legal information section of this website. Place your Apple iPod nano 4th generation on a clean flat and soft surface, such as a rubber mat or a piece of soft cloth and get the required opening tools

  • Step 1

Opening the iPod nano 4G is a complete mystery at first sight, because Apple built in a clever locking mechanism. Once you're past the locking mechanism the remaining steps are relatively straighforward.

    Step 2

Begin by prying off the top cover with a safe open tool.  If you have trouble creating space with the green tool try using a flathead and carefully wedge it between the space.  Be careful and try not to leave marks on the metal casing if you decide to use the flathead.

    Step 3

Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully remove the top cover. The hold switch slider will come loose, so try to remembr how it was installed.

    Step 4

This is what it looks like when the top cover is removed.

    Step 5

Here is another angle of the top without the cover

    Step 6

There are 2 philips screws at the top of the nano that are angled at 45 degrees make sure you have  your screwdriver at that angle so you do not strip the screws.

    Step 7

Once the 2 philips screws are removed you can now lift up metal top piece.  Do not pull hard but slowly apply more pressure to pull  up the top metal piece.

    Step 8

Here is what the screen and metal top piece will look like once it is pulled out a little.

    Step 9

Continue pulling it out until you get it ou about 1/2 inch or so.  But make sure that you do not pull it out to far or when you start feeling pressure because that can cause damage to the device.

    Step 10

The tricky part! Push on the bottom of the nano 4g lens and move it left and right. You are trying to push the bottom of the lens under the casing. This will work now, because you partially pulled the screen module out and there is room for the bottom of the lens to move down. Applying presure with your thumb at the base is the best way to do this.

    Step 11

As you can see the bottom part of the nano 4g glass lens is now between the casing and the logic board and the top of the nano 4g lens now is released from the casing.  Once the bottom is bushed down the top can be released by slightly the lens slightly inward and downward.

    Step 12

You can now take the lens out and set it aside.

    Step 13

This is the view of the nano without the lens.

    Step 14

Carefully remove the yellow tape above teh latch and circuitry.

    Step 16

Open the latch to remove the ribbon cable.

    Step 17

There is glue that is under that needs to removed.  It is glued down to the metal  underneath. Use the flathead to create space between teh cable and the metal.

    Step 18

Slide the flatheat under the ribbon cable, carefully removing it from the glue.

    Step 19

Carefully slide the flathead under the screen ribbon cable and pull it out of the connector.  Make sure the cable is completely detached from metal piece below it and that all the glue is removed.  If the cable is not completely detached from the metal when you pull it out you could break the cable.

    Step 20

Flipping the device over and looking towards the top you will se the hold or lock switch.

    Step 21

Slide the blade of the flathead under the hold switch. Be careful not to put too much strain on the ribbon cable as you release the switch from the glue.

    Step 23

You can now completely remove the nano screen module from the casing and replace it with a new one if that is your goal.

If you want to replace the ipod nano 4g battery, iPod nano 4g clickwheel or iPod nano 4g logic board continue following the guide below.

    Step 24

The next step is to remove the bottom piece of the ipod.  You can use the green tool or the flathead screwdriver.

    Step 25

A good way to remove the bottom piece is to reach through the dock connector aperture with the blade of the safe open tool and carefully pry the bottom piece off.

    Step 26

The bottom piece is held in by double sided tape.  Remove the bottom piece from the casing.

    Step 27

The bottom piece is completely removed from the ipod.

    Step 28

There are two philips head screwdrivers at the base of the nano.  They are at a 45 degree angle do you need to put you screwdriver at that angle as well.

    Step 29

Remove the other screw as well using the same method as the previous.

    Step 30

The cable that connects the hold switch needs to be unglued and lifted from the side of the battery.  Make sure you lift up as much of th ribbon as you can.

    Step 31

Work your way along releasing the cable as you move down the ipod.

    Step 32

Go all the way down to the bottom of the battery still releasing the cable.

    Step 33

Once the cable is released you can now pull out the bottom bart of the ipod.

    Step 34

Here are the 2 screws that you removed earlier.

    Step 35

Insert a screwdriver in the little grove on the side of the dock connector and try to pull the entire module consisting of headphone jack and logic board.

Alternatively you can just plug a usb cord into the dock connector and use it as a handle to pull the board.

    Step 36

Now gently pull the nano 4g motherboard module more. It may be necessary to lift the battery from the top to make the module slide.

    Step 37

This is what it looks like when the module was removed from the casing just enough to have access to the clickwheel connector. Open the latch of the clickwheel connector as shown in the image.

    Step 38

Slide the flathead under the clickwheel ribbon cable to release it from the glue. Keep the flathead from damaging the ribbon cable.

    Step 39

Open the latch of the clickwheel connector and detach the connection.

    Step 40

Fully detach the connection between the two ribbon cables when the right cable is fully released from the glue.

    Step 41

The go and release the left side of the ribbon cable from the glue.

    Step 42

When fully released from the glue the ribbon cable can be lifted as seen in the image. Do not attempt to pull the motherboard out before the cables are fully detached, otherwise they will tear.

    Step 43

This is what is looks like when module is being removed from the casing. Success, you have fully disassembled your iPod nano 4G.

    Step 44

On some models the battery is glued to the backplate. Lift the battery with a green tool and release it from the glue before you pull the board out.

    Step 45

Once the ipod nano 4g motherboard is removed you can push down on the wheel to make it snap loose from the casing.

If you want to replace the ipod nano 4g battery, look at how it is soldered to the motherboard, the replacement should be somewhat self explanatory.

iPod nano 3G - How to Open Print E-mail

    Apple iPod nano

    Before you begin

Expect cosmetic damage when you open your iPod nano using the described method. The iPod nano 3G  is not made to be user serviceable, your performing this repair at your own risk.
  • Read the legal information section of this website. Place your Apple iPod nano on a clean flat and soft surface, such as a rubber mat or a piece of soft cloth and get the required opening tools

  •

    Step 1

The iPod nano 3G is one of the hardest iPods to open because the backplate is very firmly connected to the frontplate. Be patient and calmly repeat the steps of the opening procedure until the backplate comes loose.

The part of the backplate above dock connector is the best place to insert the safe open tool.

    Step 2

Reinsert the tool at the same point, but not from inside the dock connector but the gap between frontplate and backplate. Slide the tool toward the edge, thereby creating a gap between backplate and frontplate on the right side of your iPod.

    Step 3

Slide the tool all along the bottom to the edge of the iPod.

    Step 4

You can try to slide the tool all the way around the edge. If that fails, reinsert the tool of the right side.

    Step 5

Slide the tool up toward the middle. Repeat the last steps until you created a gap large enough to insert the flathead screwdriver.

    Step 6

Repeat the last steps and twist the safe open tool. Carefully pry down using the small flathead. You will need to apply some force here and be patient until the backplate will come loose.

    Step 7

Repeat step 6 at different sections of the side. If the gap is large enough you may be able to use the flathead alone. The flathead will speed up the process but also damage the backplate more.

    Step 8

    Yay!

    Step 9

Remove all screws that hold the logic board and headphone jack into place.

    Step 10

Open the latch of the screen ribbon cable.

    Step 11

The iPod nano 3G screen is very fragile. The only way to remove it without breaking it is to avoid prying alltogether and just slide the safe open tool around the screen, applying gentle pressure, so the blade of the plastic tool slides a tiny little bit under the screen. The screen will come loose as soon all the glue has been rubbed away.

    Step 12

If you need to remove the wheel pry as shown in the image.

    Step 13

The iPod nano 3G wheel backplate is relatively sturdy, you can use the flathead screwdriver to pry it off.

    Step 14

You have fully disassembled your iPod nano 3G.
