    Step 17

Use the green tool to gently life teh motherboard away from the frame.

    Step 18

There are a couple clips that needs to be released in order to get the zune HD logicboard out of the frame.  Use a flathead to release them so it comes out easier.

    Step 19

The battery can be lifted out using the green tool wedge it slightly below to lift it out.  There is double sided tape so take your time and ease it out.

    Step 20

    Step 2

The gap between the bottom of the screw cover and the front plate is the best place to insert the safe open tool.

    Step 3

If you twist the safe open tool the screw cover will pop off exposing two Torx T4 screws.

    Step 4

Use your Torx T4 screwdriver to remove them.

    Step 5

Pry between the front and backplate next to the aperture of the screw cover.

    Step 6

Slide the tool toward the edge, thereby widening the gap between backplate and frontplate on the right side of your Zune II. You can try to slide the tool all the way around the edge. If that fails, reinsert the tool of the right side.

    Step 7

    Step 8

Slide the tool all along the side to the bottom of the Zune.

    Step 9

Repeat the last steps and twist the safe open tool. You will need to apply some force here and be patient until the backplate will come loose.

    Step 10

Sometimes you may not succeed with the plastic tool alone. You can use the flathead screwdrive which will give you more torque, but is also more likely to cause cosmetic damage.

    Step 11

Once the back was release from all clips you can lift it up and set it aside.

    Step 12

You have successfully opened your Zune 2.

Zune 2 - How to Replace the Battery http://www.portatronics.com/guide/Zune-Repair-Guide/zune2-battery-replacement.html http://www.portatronics.com/guide/Zune-Repair-Guide/zune2-battery-replacement.html

Warning - This repair requires soldering skills.

    Step 13

As you can see this battery is defective and needs to be replaced.

Begin by removing the shielding foil taped over the top of the hard drive.

    Step 14

Pry up the Zune hard drive using the opening tool.

    Step 15

Lift up the hard drive and pay attention to the ribbon cable at the bottom of the hard drive. It is extremely sensitive. Make sure the cable does not get punctured or dented.

    Step 16

Peel off the shielding foil over the audio jack ribbon cable and battery cable. Don't tear it or damage it, it needs to be re-applied upon reassembly. In General: be very careful with the shielding foil on all components, if it is not reapplied correctly it can keep the Zune from powering up properly after reassembly.

    Step 18

Use the opening tool as a lever to pry the Zune Battery loose from the double sided tape on it's bottom.

    Step 19

In the image you see how the battery is soldered to the zune logic board. Use a soldering iron to disconnect the defective battery.

    Step 20

Connect the new battery to the solder pads using the same color coding as the original battery.

For reassembly follow the steps in reverse order. Remember to reapply all aluminum shielding foil.
