RIM has deployed a new touchscreen smartphone called Storm 2: the successor to the original Blackberry Storm. Let's start off by talking about some major improvements : the touchscreen has been equipped with an electro-mechanical system which makes it easier to launch applications. This imroved tactile feedback mechanism allows for typing that is both faster and more precise compared to the first Storm. Blackberry went in the same direction with the send and menu button bar: all touch sensors instead of mechanical buttons.
The new Storm finally has Wi-Fi, enabling high speed internet use when a wireless network is available, a feature blatantly missing on the orignial Storm.
Let's talk about the hardware: The memory has been increased 2GB. A microSD 2.0 slot has been added, allowing the use of 32GB microSD card storage devices.
And more importantly, the Storm2 has the new operating system "version 5". In general the Storm2 seems faster, the new OS and processor collaborate seemlessly to provide a swifter, more responsive user experience.
Pushing on the name or email address generates an email dialogue history, a very useful feature, just like the new cut and paste that seems more intutitive to use.
The Storm2 beats the original Storm in many aspects, RIM really listened to the users and created a Storm that will pull those into the boat that liked the concept of the original Storm but were turned off by the mechanical tactile feedback and missing Wi-Fi.
