Water damaged iPod Touch

Postby wesmizell@sbcglobal.net » Tue Dec 29, 2009 1:25 am

I have an 8GB iPod touch that fell in water but was removed immediately. The water has affected it as it won't power up or even be recognized by iTunes. It's pretty much dead. I found this website and read some of the forums where other people have gotten theirs wet. Some of the responses mention corroded connections may be a problem. My question is how do I clean the corrosion from the connections and do I clean all of the connections. Is one part of the iPod possibly damaged beyond repair which would make the cleaning futile. Is there really any hope for an iPod after having been emersed in water. To this point I followed the repair guide on this website and have completely disassembled the iPod except for screen removal (very good instructions by the way) and am ready to clean if it is worth it. Also I don't notice any corrosion on the connections but maybe I just can't see it with the naked eye. I will try a magnafying glass for a closer look. Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't see corrosion that is a bad sign, since if there is no water and also no residue from evaporated water there is nothing you can try to remove. In rare cases the water permanently damages the circuitry even though the damage is not visible. Make sure your dock connector is also not corroded and let the iPod sit open in an warm and dry spot for a while. Make sure your battery was not affected (measure voltage if you can - should be around 3.7V).
If after all that you can't get it to work you need a new logic board.

proband thank you for responding. The only water residue I saw was inside the back cover. Everything else looked pretty good. I will check the battery voltage next. If voltage is good I will put it back together and see what happens. Just to be sure I would like to clean the connections as I reassemble the iPod. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should use? I believe someone mentioned Denatured Alcohol in another forum. Would this be adequate for removing corrosion?

Hi I recently dropped my ipod in the toilet actually  funny but not cool. Anyway, my ipod still starts up is recognized by itunes I've even downloaded games onto it and the games I can play just fine. The only thing that doesn't work with it is it doesn't play music and/or movies. I push the play button but it just goes straight back to wanting me to push play. Can this be fixed considering most of my ipod seems to be working still?
