I've gone ahead and tried to replace the cracked glass
screen on my ipod touch 2g, seemed to go very smoothly. Now the new glass
doesn't respond to anything! Tried the connection several times to no avail.
The ribbon is good. Do you think that it needs repair or is there something
that I'm missing here?

Look at the ribbon cable of the digitizer closely. Many times when you take off the protective film by the ribbon cable, and you take if off too fast, the ribbon cable gets damaged. there is a small loop on the ribbon cable, if that is torn, the digitizer is done too. If it's a new digitizer and you get zero touch sensitivity, i'm almost certain the ribboncable was accidentally damaged.
