iPod Touch 2G Home Button hdw problem

Postby VictorSlade » Fri Jan 29, 2010 10:08 pm

2L7B5KCAfter replacing a cracked digitizer, all is fine except that the Home Button does not function. From the original bezel, I had to carefully remove the tiny little ribbon-type cable from the small metal strip. I think crazy-glued it to the little metal strip on the new bezel, making sure to align it properly by lining up three tiny holes. Anyway, despite doing all of this, the Home Button now does not work. There are several YouTube videos showing how to disassemble this device, but I haven't found any that display reassembly. Also, the Home Button seems to be impossible to test without popping the new digitizer/bezel back into the iPod Touch.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. At this point, my thought is to disassemble the unit again, which seems to be difficult to accomplish without breaking the bezel again.

There is a gold plated contact spring screwed onto the logic board that makes contact with the menu button. Without that contact spring it will not work.

If the spring is there and it still doesn't work proceed with the following:
Take a multimeter (diode tester) to the contacts of the menu button. If you diode tester beeps when you press the button, you know that the menu button works.
Now you can turn on the iPod with screen connected and start up some application. Take a bent paperclip to short the contacts on the logic board (thereby mimicking the functionality of the menu button). If the app closes upon your paperclip shorting, the problem must lie in the connection between menu button and motherboard, since you tested both the logic board and the menu button separately and found them to be working.
